It's mid-August. The cicadas are LOUD! The bur oaks are dropping their fruits in large numbers. The acorns crunch under feet and can be thick enough that my feet slip on the sidewalk like it is covered in marbles. The July prairie flowers are finishing up and the August goldenrods and blazing stars are getting going. Soon the fall colors in the prairie and the woods will be begin to shine. I'm not ready yet... Give me a few days of warm weather and long days. The signs are all there though... by 8:30 PM it is dark now. The days are getting shorter. The hints of autumn are around us. Yet summer hangs on. The humidity, the buzzing insects, the hopping grasshoppers, the back to school sales, the Halloween costumes already in the stores...
