Bear Scouts: Furs, Feathers and Ferns
Bear Scouts looking to complete an Adventure can look no further! Dens can schedule a two hour program as as special field trip to a local park or Scientific and Natural Area nearby (meeting one the Adventure Requirements.
During the two hours scouts will:
1. Identify six signs that any mammals, birds, insects, reptiles, or plants are living nearby the place where you choose to hike.
2. Name one animal that has become extinct in the last 100 years and one animal that is currently endangered. Explain what caused their declines.
3. Visit one of the following: zoo, wildlife refuge, nature center, aviary, game preserve, local conservation area, wildlife rescue group, or fish hatchery. Describe what you learned during your visit.
4. Observe wildlife from a distance. Describe what you saw.
5. Use a magnifying glass to examine plants more closely. Describe what you saw through the magnifying glass that you could not see without it.
6. Learn about composting and how vegetable waste can be turned into fertilizer for plants.*
7. Plant a vegetable or herb garden.*
*These two requirements are optional as they can be done during the den's regular meeting time. For an additional fee, a one hour program can be scheduled during your meeting time focusing on composting and planting herbs that can be grown indoors. Cost details below.
Cost: $60/2 hour program up to 10 scouts; $6 each additional scout
Optional Composting Program Cost: $30/1 hour program up to 10 scouts; $3 each additional scout; $2.50/scout fee for herb planting materials.
